Bringing a new dog home is such a fun and heartwarming experience, but it’s also a big adjustment—for both of you! Here's a checklist and some tips to make the transition smooth:
🏡 Before Your Dog Comes Home
Dog-proof your house
Hide electrical cords, small objects, toxic plants/foods.
Set boundaries for no-go zones.
Get the essentials ready
Food & water bowls
High-quality dog food
Crate or dog bed
Toys (chew, puzzle, squeaky)
Collar with ID tag & leash
Grooming supplies
Cleaning supplies (accidents happen!)
🐕 First Day at Home
Keep things calm
Let them explore slowly—don’t overwhelm them with attention.
Show them their food area, potty spot, and sleeping space.
Stick to a schedule
Regular feeding, walks, and potty breaks help them adjust quickly.
Limit visitors
Give them time to bond with you before meeting lots of new people.
📅 First Week
Visit the vet
For a check-up, vaccinations, microchip, and any questions you have.
Start training gently
Use positive reinforcement for basic commands like sit, stay, and come.
Observe and learn
Learn your dog’s habits and body language—every dog is unique!
💡 Tips
Be patient. It might take days or even weeks for them to feel totally comfortable.
Don’t forget about mental stimulation—training games, puzzle toys, etc.
Reward good behavior consistently.
Crate training can help with security and house training.
Extra Pro Tip: All my dogs (at all ages) but especially as puppies LOVE when I play them calming dog music for them. There are many soothing dog playlist videos on youtube!
Want a specific routine or tips for your dog’s age/breed? Or maybe a name suggestion if you're still deciding? 😊
